Giggling

This morning I had to do it.  I had to draw a smile in the margin of my Bible beside the verse I had just read.  I trust no one will find that completely and totally irreverent, but that's the kind of intimate relationship God and I share.

I was reading in 1 Corinthians 7.  Paul is teaching the principles of marriage and then gives a discourse to unmarried and widows.  I came to his closing verses, and honestly, I laughed.

"A wife is bound by law as long as her husband lives; but if her husband dies, she is at liberty to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord.  But she is happier if she remains as she is, according to my judgment - and I think I also have the Spirit of God."

Does that last phrase strike anyone else as funny?  I love Paul's personal opinion tossed in at no extra cost.  He not only throws in his thought on the matter, but backs his decision by saying, and just so you know, I think the Spirit of God agrees with me on this one.  :-)

I think it seemed extra humourous to me because recently I experienced a similar thing.  I had received a gift.  The lady giving it to me was expressing hope that I'd really enjoy it.  She knew it was the perfect gift, yet feared it might not be as meaningful to me.  So, just in case I might not appreciate it with the same fervour, she said, "I felt the Lord tell me to purchase this for you so if you don't like it, you don't like what the Lord has chosen."   Nothing like having the gift sanctioned by God.  What choice would I have now?  It just made me giggle inside.  Later when I showed the gift to my husband I told him he couldn't say anything against it, God had chosen it!

I'm having a bit of fun with this passage today and I hope you all don't mind.  Sometimes Scripture makes me chuckle.  Is there a verse that makes you laugh?  As long as we're not laughing in doubt or ridicule, I think the Lord is OK.  I imagine, like us, He might have even laughed at Himself sometimes.

I love your humour. Comments reminded me of Gen. 24:50. I was happy to hear you are blogging again. Thanks you for the verse from Romans. How true!
Blessings. Lois
